Axel Hütte

1951, Essenlives & works in Dusseldorf

Axel Hütte, born in 1951 in Essen, studied photography under Bernd and Hilla Becher and is one of the best-known representatives of the »Düsseldorfer Photoschule«. The influence of the Bechers is noticeable in the conceptuality of Hütte's large-format, inanimate landscape photographs, where the visible external reality serves only as an image base, in order to explore the possibilities of reality reproduction and human perception. Since he does not manipulate his photographs either mechanically or chemically after being made with a plate camera, all aspects, such as light, weather and perspective, must correspond to his exact ideas. In his photographs, Hütte alienates familiar landscapes through the intermeshing of nature and architecture, or conscious concealing and revealing, in order to play with the expectations of the beholder and to cause reflection and questioning through the visual exploration of the image content. For Hütte not the mere documentation of the events is important, but the artistic translation of a subjective sensation.
