Bernar Venet

1941, Château-Arnoux, Francelives and works in New York

As a representative of Conceptual Art, Bernar Venet's works of art focus on the idea and the artistic concept. Some of his inspiration comes from mathematical diagrams or scientific drawings. However, Venet does not see himself as a mathematician. He is only interested in science as a motivator and formal source of inspiration. Most of his sculptures are industrially produced and weigh several tons, but are still visually characterized by a lightness that opposes their true weight. The lines that the steel draws into the space define and emphasize it. They encourage the viewer to think further about the sculpture, to mentally close circles and to continue arches. It almost seems as if Venet had painted signs into the room with the steel in order to charge it energetically and optically.
