Candida Höfer

1944lives and works in Cologne

Candida Höfer is another graduate of the »Düsseldorfer Photoschule« of Bernd and Hilla Becher who had already completed her regular training as a photographer before her studies. In the beginning of her work she dealt with people as motives, such as in her series of photographs of Turkish migrants in Germany first shown in 1975. She, however, only reached to greater notoriety with her pictures of deserted, public and semi-public spaces. These works show areas of different epochs and functions and have been taken under the given light conditions with a small or medium format camera. Since no action takes place in the designated rooms, time seems to stand still in the pictures. The viewers get shown the visible, but also get a sense of the invisible mediated through traces of action.
