Günther Uecker

1930, Wendorf (Mecklenburg)lives and works in Düsseldorf

Günther Uecker, who was born in Wendorf in 1930. During his time at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, from 1955 to 1957, he initially occupied himself with the art of socialist realism and abstract art. Already at that time he began to create sculptures, graphics and paintings using iron nails of various sizes, which from then on should has served as a common thread through his wide-ranging oeuvre. He uses this, inter alia, for the production of embossing prints and for arranging spiral and concentric-circular nail fields on canvas over wood. In heavy contrast to his works which appear harmonious in their movement patterns, there are everyday objects, clothes and furniture, which he alienates by nailing their surfaces. The themes of movement and interplay of light and shadow, which reveal themselves in his works, became increasingly important to him, when Uecker joined the artist group »ZERO«, founded by Otto Piene and Heinz Mack in 1961, where he engaged with kinetic light art.
