Book dealer apprenticeship in Tübingen/Germany

First publication of his own poems

1899

Moves to Basle/Switzerland, continues to work as an apprentice in a book shop until 1903

1915

Works for the Prisoners of War Welfare Organization in Bern/Switzerland; (its primary function was to provide German prisoners in France and in America, as well as those interned in Switzerland, with books and small libraries); numerous invocations against racial hatred

1916-17

Gets psychotherapeutical treatment by J. B. Lang after a nervous breakdown; begins to paint

1920

First exhibition of his watercolours at Kunsthalle Basel/ Switzerland

1936

Press campaign against Hesse in Germany, where at the latest since 1939, the beginning of World War II , Hesse is considered as an “undiserable author"

1946

Nobel prize for literature and Goethe prize of the city of Frankfurt/Germany

1955

Peace prize of the German Bookdealers Association

1956

Creation of the Hermann Hesse Prize

1962

Hermann Hesse dies in Montagnola/Ticino/Switzerland on August 9th
