Tony Cragg

Born in Liverpool in 1949, sculptor Anthony Cragg uses a variety of materials to create his sculptures: wood, stainless steel and stone, as well as more unconventional materials such as Kevlar and fiberglass. He even reuses collected garbage as part of his repertoire according to Marcel Duchamp's »Ready-mades« by arranging it figuratively in new contexts. Cragg's works require being circumambulated by the viewer in the round. As one walks around his works, perception changes, as every new viewpoint reveals other silhouettes, faces and figures that remain in different moments of movement as though time had stood still. The volatility evoked by the suggested movements stands in contrast to the sheer weight of the oftentimes heavy materials.
