He therefore was accepted to study at the Grand Ducal School of Art in Weimar, where he received an education that significantly influenced his artistic career. As a history painter he won the favour of the Grand Duke of Saxony-Weimar, who supported him as a patron. Through his contacts to renowned collectors such as Karl Ernst Osthaus and his appointment to the Folkwang Hochschule, his style continued to develop around 1910 under the impressions of the flourishing "Brücke" artists.
